The Cleveland Browns traded Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams on June 1. Los Angeles sent back edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2029 third. Within hours, the Philadelphia Eagles traded wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots for two picks. It was the most consequential single day of the 2026 NFL offseason, and the calendar date was doing real work.
Why June 1
Trading Garrett carried roughly $41 million in dead money. Executed before June 1, all of it accelerates onto the current year's cap. Executed after, it splits across two league years. Cleveland waited, and in waiting turned a single unmanageable charge into two survivable ones.
The groundwork was laid in March, when the Browns modified Garrett's contract to push his option bonuses to seven days before the start of the regular season. That adjustment is the tell. Restructuring a bonus date does nothing for a team planning to keep a player; it exists to make him tradeable. The Rams' interest reportedly sharpened shortly after that modification became known.
The Rams Are Buying A Season
Super Bowl LXI will be played at SoFi Stadium in February. Los Angeles is assembling a roster to play a title game in its own building, and the price was a 2027 first, a 2028 second, a 2029 third, and Verse, a first-round edge rusher himself. Trading a young, cheap, ascending pass rusher plus premium capital for a seven-time Pro Bowler is the least ambiguous win-now transaction available in football.
For Cleveland, the return is the more interesting half. Verse arrives on a rookie contract with years of control remaining, and the Browns now hold an extra 2027 first alongside their own. That is the architecture of a rebuild that intends to be short.
And Then Philadelphia Moved Brown
The Eagles sent A.J. Brown to New England for two picks the same day. Philadelphia had spent three seasons building an offense around him; the Patriots had spent two building a roster around a quarterback who lacked one.
Taken together, the two trades reset the 2027 draft board before the 2026 season has kicked off. Cleveland and New England each restructured their futures in an afternoon, and both did it on the first day the calendar made it affordable.
