The board opens with a ten-pick gap
Bill Connelly's annual "40 most important players" ranking, published at ESPN on Aug. 4, puts Texas quarterback Arch Manning fifth and Oregon quarterback Dante Moore sixth. One slot apart. That is where the tidy part of the 2027 quarterback conversation ends. Pro Football Network's early 2027 mock draft has Manning going No. 3 overall to the Jets and Moore sliding to No. 13, to Minnesota. Same tier on the "who matters this fall" list, a full ten picks apart on the "who gets paid first" list. The season that starts this month is what closes or widens that gap.
The November number that built Manning's stock
Manning's case is a sample-size argument scouts love. Connelly notes that from November onward last season, Manning led the nation in Total QBR, throwing 11 touchdowns against a single interception across that stretch. That is the tape that turned a preseason projection into a top-five board slot: not the full-season line, but the closing month, when the offense finally looked like "all the potential we were supposed to see late in 2025," in Connelly's words.
The mock reflects it. PFN's blurb leans on the physical profile, 6-foot-4 with dual-threat ability, and frames 2026 as the year Manning proves he can "fully live up to the expectations." The caveat Connelly attaches is fundamentals on the move, and Manning does it behind a thinner but higher-upside supporting cast. For a first-year full-time starter with one strong month on record, the opener is the first data point that either extends the November curve or reopens the questions.
Moore's top-10 problem
Moore is the more complicated file, and the more interesting one. Connelly is blunt about the ceiling: Moore "would have been a top-two pick in this year's NFL draft" had he declared, and instead returned to Oregon. That is the bull case in one sentence. The bear case is in the splits. Moore finished 15th in Total QBR in 2025 despite excellent raw numbers, and against top-10 SP+ defenses (five games) he averaged 5.9 yards per dropback with a 36% success rate and four touchdowns to five interceptions.
That is the number the whole return gamble hinges on. A top-two-caliber arm that dips to 5.9 yards a dropback against elite fronts is exactly the profile that returns to school to fix one thing: proving he can, in Connelly's framing, "make big-time throws to beat big-time defenses." PFN's own note is that the decision to return "could either elevate or hurt his draft stock." There is no neutral outcome baked in. Moore came back to move, in one direction or the other.
Why the opener is the tiebreaker
Here is why the first weekend carries outsized weight for both. The 2026 preseason coaches poll opens with Ohio State at No. 1 (38 first-place votes, the program's first season-opening top ranking since 2015) and Oregon at No. 2, with Texas fourth after a 10-3 finish. Ranked teams draw ranked opponents early, and top-10 defenses are precisely the sample that separated Moore's raw production from his stock last year. Scouts do not weight every dropback equally; the ones against real fronts count double. An early marquee result is a stock event, not just a win.
The rest of the board is not a quarterback
The pressure is sharper because this class does not need a quarterback at the top. PFN's mock opens with offensive tackle Jordan Seaton at No. 1 and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith at No. 2, the latter coming off back-to-back seasons over 1,200 yards and 12-plus touchdowns. Notre Dame corner Leonard Moore and South Carolina edge Dylan Stewart round out the early top five. In a draft where the blue-chip non-quarterbacks are this loud, Manning and Moore cannot coast on projection. They have to separate on tape, and the tape starts this month.
